Wison Granted AIP for Its Innovative Floating LNG Storage

Wison Offshore & Marine announced that it has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from Bureau Veritas  for its newly-developed large-scale Floating LNG Storage and Regasification Terminal. Featuring scalable storage capacity up to equivalent size of a Q-Max, this is the first large-scale FSRU barge design that has been granted AIP by a classification society. Statoil Set to Drill Its Biggest Arctic Hope

Norway's Statoil will soon start drilling this season's most promising Arctic prospect, Korpfjell, after several disappointing wells in the Barents Sea, the company said on Monday. The majority state-owned company has stepped up drilling in the Barents Sea this year as the government seeks to attract more explorers to its Arctic waters to make up for declining North Sea output. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said on Monday Statoil's latest well in the Barents Sea, Gemini North, had found only minor volumes of gas and oil.

TWMA Wins North Sea Contract with Azinor Catalyst

TWMA, a provider of drill cuttings and slop handling, management and treatment solutions, said it has been awarded a contract estimated to be worth around £1 million with UKCS-focused E&P company, Azinor Catalyst Limited. The project, which commences in August 2017, will see TWMA provide drill cuttings containment and processing services on the Ocean Guardian rig in the Central North Sea. Azinor Catalyst has contracted the semi-submersible rig for the drilling of two wells in 2017.

Big MHI Vestas Test Wind Turbine on Fire

A test version of MHI Vestas' V164, the world's most powerful windturbine, has caught fire at a test centre in the west of Denmark.   "Our technicians and experts will look into what has caused the fire," a Vestas spokesman told Reuters, declining to comment further.   The V164 model is MHI Vestas' top model designed to challenge Siemens Gamesa, the market leader in the growing offshore market.   MHI Vestas is a joint venture of Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Denmark's Vestas. ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) hull design. Chevron Approves New Tech in North Sea

U.S. oil major Chevron has approved an investment to increase output from its Captain oilfield by using a new water-injection technology for the first time in the North Sea, the company said on Friday. Six long-reach horizontal wells will be drilled in the 20-year-old field, around 90 miles northeast of Aberdeen. They are expected to raise the recovery rate 5 to 7 percent. Polymerised water will be injected into the field's oil reservoir, a new technique to tap oil reserves that are hard to reach with conventional drilling methods.

Tendeka Wins Lower Completion Contract in Middle East

Tendeka has been awarded a project to supply the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) with its Inflow Control Device (ICD) technology which will enhance production through more effective reservoir management. The multimillion-pound deal will involve Tendeka installing Advanced ICD equipment in 55 horizontal wells over two years in Northern Kuwait. Tendeka will perform reservoir simulations for each well, working closely with KOC to ensure optimum reservoir performance. Tendeka has installed over 7,000 passive ICDs and 20,000 autonomous ICDs globally.

Wison Launches Buoyant Tower Solutions with Storage

Ichthys Explorer Moored off Western Australia

The world’s largest semi-submersible platform, the Ichthys Explorer, has been safely moored in the Ichthys Field, 220 kilometers off the north coast of Western Australia, where it will be located for 40 years, as part of the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project. Bardex Corporation supplied four moveable Chain Jacks and 28 underwater Barlatches to support the handling of 28 mooring lines. The mooring operation was completed ahead of schedule with the assistance of Bardex lifecycle services.

N-Sea Begins Work in Cameroonian Offshore Market

Subsea services provider N-Sea said it has begun work in the Cameroonian offshore market, via a contract win with Dutch offshore lifting and transportation company Jumbo Offshore. With phase one completed in mid-July, the project takes place off the shores of Cameroon’s South Province, as a part of the Hilli Episeyo Subsea Soft Yoke Installation. N-Sea’s workscope comprises diving and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) support, performing all subsea installation of the soft yoke system.

Aquaterra Signs Investment Deal with EV

Aquaterra Energy, a  global offshore engineering solutions provider, has secured a multi-million pound investment from EV Private Equity as the company gears up for service expansion and new technology launches. The deal is the first to be agreed following EV’s pledge last year to invest $200 million in North Sea businesses with new technologies and high growth potential. The independent private equity firm confirmed it was seeking to invest between $10 million to $40 million in each company.

Moog Focal has introduced the Quad Serial Server (QSS) module, which combines a 4-channel serial server with integrated 3-port Ethernet switch on a single 3U Eurocard to seamlessly integrate serial interface sensors with modern Ethernet-based control systems. It also enables transmission of Ethernet data over legacy serial telemetry links. The QSS has extra connectors for modular expansion, enabling the addition of more serial ports, 4-20 mA channels, and fault-tolerant CAN Bus interfaces.

Wind measurement experts gathered in London claimed that LiDARs have been replacing met masts to become the sole wind measurement tool used for offshore resource assessment and power curve verification purposes. These experts stated that LiDAR technology had over the years fully proven its ability to provide wind measurements as reliably as met masts. They also claimed that LiDARs are faster, easier and much cheaper to deploy, enabling significant development and operational cost reductions.

Partners Evaluating Conversion of Natural Gas to Hydrogen

Statoil, Vattenfall and Gasunie have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to evaluate the possibilities of converting Vattenfall’s gas power plant Magnum in the Netherlands into a hydrogen-powered plant. The potential CO2 emission reduction is 4 million tons of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to emissions from more than 2 million cars. The next steps will involve feasibility studies to evaluate the conversion of one of the three Magnum units of Vattenfall Nuon in Eemshaven to run on hydrogen.

Wind Power's Big Bet: Colossal Turbines

Wind farm operators are betting on a new generation of colossal turbines, which will dwarf many skyscrapers, as they seek to remain profitable after European countries phase out subsidies that have defined the green industry since the 1990s. The world's three leading offshore wind operators - DONG Energy, EnBW and Vattenfall - all told Reuters they were looking to these megaturbines to help adapt to the upcoming reality with dwindling government handouts.

YPF Says Technology Lowering Its Shale Costs

Longer horizontal wells and technology improvements will help Argentine state-run oil company YPF SA lower costs at its most productive shale field, but better infrastructure is still needed in the remote Vaca Muerta play, an executive said. The breakeven price at the Loma Campana field is $43 per barrel and falling while development costs are $12.90 per barrel and expected to fall to $10 next year, said Pablo Bizzotto, executive manager at YPF's unconventional resources unit.

A ban on Norway's Statoil using a pioneering drilling technology in the Barents Sea was lifted after a plaintiff failed to post security in a patent dispute, a lawyer said on Thursday. A Stavanger court earlier in June upheld an injunction on the technology's use, pending payment of a 20 million Norwegian crown ($2.35 million) security by privately owned NeoDrill. NeoDrill was unable to post the security due to its "very limited economic position".

LR Verifies BP FPSO Glen Lyon

The Glen Lyon floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, BP’s newest North Sea asset, was awarded full-term classification certificates for service in the Schiehallion and Loyal fields, 175 km west of Shetland. Conditions west of Shetland are among the most severe in the UK and Glen Lyon must be capable of operating in extreme weather. Classification means the Glen Lyon FPSO has been verified for operation to the highest levels of safety and performance by LR.

World First: Commercial Onshore Remote WROV Ops

Norwegian ingenuity in the subsea space strikes again, as IKM Subsea, based in Bryne, Norway, has opened what it believes is the world’s first commercial onshore controlled ROV operations. In the near future up to three Work class ROVs and one Observation ROV on Statoil’s Snorre B and Visund installations will be controlled from IKM Subsea’s onshore control center. One of the Work Class ROVs (RROV) has been designed and engineered to be permanently based on the seabed and will only be brought to surface for periodic maintenance.

Tampnet, provider of high-capacity, low-latency based telecommunication infrastructure and services for the offshore oil and gas industry, was awarded a contract by Statoil for connecting the Johan Sverdrup field to their existing 2,500km subsea fiber infrastructure in the North Sea. This contract and turn-key project will optimize and strengthen the telecommunication infrastructure for this modern and digitalized field development. Global offshore engineering solutions provider Aquaterra Energy has designed, fabricated and installed a new Sea Swift platform for PICO Petroleum Integrated Services, the lead contractor for Amal Petroleum Company’s (AMAPETCO) Amal field in the Gulf of Suez, offshore Egypt. The Sea Swift is a Conductor Supported Platform (CSP) and is installed in 23 meters water depth. It included a 385 metric ton topside featuring a helideck and emergency accommodation with provision for six wells.

China Resumes Light Cycle Oil Imports

China has resumed imports of light cycle oil (LCO) after buyers cancelled shipments in April, as a planned Chinese consumption tax has not been announced, four industry sources said this week. Less than 1 million tonnes of LCO are being shipped from South Korea to China in May and June, compared with a peak of 2 million to 3 million tonnes, said two of the sources, both from South Korean refiners. The lower volumes reflects cautious buyers, they said.

Danfoss, General Electric Join Forces

Danfoss Silicon Power has  announced it is establishing production in the U.S. and entering into a collaboration with industrial giant General Electric (GE). The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) today announced it plans to offer approximately 1.09 million acres in Cook Inlet off Alaska’s southcentral coast in a proposed lease sale this year. Cook Inlet Oil & Gas Lease Sale 244, scheduled to take place in June 2017, would offer 224 blocks toward the northern part of the Cook Inlet Planning Area for leasing. The blocks stretch roughly from Kalgin Island in the north to Augustine Island in the south.

A unit of Indian engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro has won an onshore engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Indian Oil Corp Ltd, the country's largest refiner, worth 11 billion rupees ($165 million), it said in a statement on Saturday. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced a plan to acquire a 5% share in Seajacks International Limited (Seajacks) Group, which owns and operates five Self-Elevating Platform vessels(*1), from Marubeni Corporation. This is a new offshore business for MOL, following FPSO(*2), FSRU (*3), shuttle tanker (*4), and subsea support vessel (*5). It is also the first step to move into the renewable energy business field through involvement in installation of offshore wind power generation systems, which is expanding in Europe and other areas around the world.

iSURVEY has secured a non exclusive call-off contract with Shell UK Ltd, Shell NAM, Norske Shell and Shell E&P Ireland for the provision of rig positioning and surveying services. With an effective date of 1 January 2017, the three year contract, which has the option of up to two, one year extensions, will see iSURVEY provide non exclusive rig and surface positioning services, subsurface positioning and dimensional control and platform surveys to Shell’s mobile offshore drilling units.

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) announces that its subsidiary VBMS has been awarded an inter-array cabling contract with a value of approximately EUR 80 million by EnBW Hohe See GmbH & Co.KG for the 500 MW EnBW Hohe See Offshore Wind Farm. The contract includes the supply, installation and burial as well as termination and testing of seventy nine (79) 33kV inter-array cables. The project execution will commence in 2017 with cable installation activities scheduled for 2018 and 2019.

Bourbon  announced its first pipelay contract awarded by Total Gabon for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of 25 km of 6” rigid pipeline as part of the Hylia Water Injection Project using Zap-Lok technology. For the execution of this contract, BOURBON is subcontracting key suppliers, mainly Cortez Subsea, for pipelay equipment and Wood Group for the pipeline design and pipelay engineering. Italy Breaks up Libyan Fuel Smuggling Ring

Sicilian police on Wednesday sought the arrest of nine people, including a suspected mobster, for running a Libyan fuel-smuggling ring in which at least 30 million euros ($35 million) of diesel was sold in gas stations in Italy and Europe. A Libyan, nicknamed the "boss", used small boats to steal fuel from a refinery in Zawiya, a port city west of Tripoli, a statement from the finance police said. The fuel, stolen from Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC), was then transferred to a larger ship off the coast of Malta and brought to Italy.

Double On-site Seal Repair on Offshore Platform in Mexico

In August a team of Hydrex divers traveled to Veracruz, Mexico for a stern tube seal repair. The operation consisted of the underwater replacement of the damaged seals on both assemblies of a semi-submersible offshore platform. The unit left the field after its project was finished and was berthed alongside to have repair and maintenance work carried out without docking. We were asked to perform the stern tube seal repairs during the available window of opportunity.

Most US Oil Execs See Prices below $60/Barrel through 2018

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. oil executives see crude oil prices remaining below $60 per barrel through 2018 and not hitting $70 until at least the next decade, according to a survey published on Wednesday by consultancy Deloitte Services LP. The survey, based on a poll of 250 executives at companies that produce, transport and refine oil and natural gas, reflects a shift from last year when many respondents forecast commodity prices would rise and capital spending budgets grow. U.S. oil prices fell slightly on Wednesday to $50.79 per barrel.

UK to Provide 557 mln stg Funding for Renewables

The British government confirmed on Wednesday up to 557 million pounds ($734 million) of funding for the next clean electricity auctions for less-established renewables. The next so-called contracts-for-difference (CfD) auction will take place in spring 2019, the government said in a statement but has not yet confirmed how much will be available for that auction. Less-established renewables include offshore wind, biomass, energy-from-waste technologies and some combined heat and power projects, a government spokesman said.

New HT/HP Subsea Valve Coating Developed and Deployed

An international collaboration between Hardide Coatings and Master Flo Valve Inc (MFV) has developed a new solution to protect high temperature, high pressure (HT/HP) subsea choke valves. The valves are the first of their kind to feature the Hardide-T coating, which can be applied to choke valve stems so they can withstand temperatures up to 400°F and pressures of 20,000 psi. Canada-headquartered MFV found that alternative hard coatings previously applied to the stem assembly were not rated to sufficiently high temperatures.

Cairn Oil and Gas to Invest $4.6 bln in New Exploration

Cairn Oil and Gas, part of Vedanta Ltd, will invest 300 billion rupees ($4.6 billion) in exploration projects off India's east coast and in the onshore fields of Barmer in the west, its acting CEO said. The company expects approvals to be in place by the end of October, Sudhir Mathur told Reuters on the sidelines of the India Energy Forum in New Delhi, as Cairn undertakes a fresh investment plan after the extension of its production contract until 2030.

France Wins EU Nod for Renewable Energy Schemes

EU state aid regulators approved on Friday four French schemes that will allow the country to produce more than 7.5 gigawatts in energy from onshore wind and solar, saying the projects were in line with EU competition rules. France aims to produce 23 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. The European Commission said France will evaluate the schemes and brief regulators on the impact with an interim report in 2018 and a final one in 2022.

Higher investments in offshore oil production are critical to avoiding a supply squeeze by 2020, as expanding shale output will not match projected demand increases in the next few years, U.S. oil producer Hess Corp said on Thursday. The past four years of low oil prices have major producers pulling back on needed offshore investment, and the gap between supply and demand should help prices rebound, Hess Chief Operating Officer Greg Hill said at an energy conference at Rice University's Baker Institute.

Maersk Oil CEO to Step Down after Total Takeover

The chief executive of Maersk Oil, Gretchen Watkins, will leave the company when Total's acquisition of the company has been completed, Maersk said Wednesday. Watkins joined Maersk Oil as Chief Operating Officer in January 2014 and took the role of CEO in October last year. Prior to joining Maersk Oil, she had worked at Marathon Oil and BP. Total agreed last month to buy the oil and gas business of A.P. Moller-Maersk for $7.45 billion, strengthening the French major's operations in the North Sea.

Iran to Build Oil Refinery in Syria

Iran will build an oil refinery in Syria, the head of downstream technologies at Iran’s Research Institute of the Petroleum Industry was quoted by Fars news agency as saying on Tuesday. The refinery, to be built near the city of Homs, will have a production capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, Akbar Zamanian reportedly said. The refinery project is one of a series of business deals the Islamic Republic has announced that point to a deepening economic role after years of fighting in the Syrian conflict.

Exxon Aims to Curb Methane Emissions from Shale Division

Exxon Mobil Corp said on Monday it would launch a program to curb its methane emissions from its U.S. shale facilities by replacing aging equipment and updating dated technology, part of a plan by the company to reduce its environmental footprint. The program comes as Exxon, the world's largest publicly traded oil producer, fights accusations by environmentalists and others that it misled investors and the public for years about the risks of climate change from fossil fuels.

Statoil Achieves Climate Target Two Years Ahead of Schedule

Statoil has already achieved its 2015 target of reducing the CO2 emissions from the Norwegian continental shelf by 1.2 million tonnes annually from 2008 to 2020. GTT to Design LNG Tanks for FSRU Newbuild

GTT said it has received an order from the South Korean Shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries concerning a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) which has been contracted by Triumph Offshore, a subsidiary of the Indian ship-owner Swan Energy. GTT will design the LNG integrated tanks which represent a total capacity of 180,000 m3. These tanks will be equipped with the membrane containment system Mark III, a sea-proven technology developed by GTT.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has completed the design review of the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) documentation for the VolturnUS, a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), developed by the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. “UMaine is pleased that its innovative design became the first floating wind turbine concrete semisubmersible hull to be reviewed by ABS, and found to meet the ABS requirements,” said Dr. Habib J.
